Dementia – Alzheimer’s Problems: Mr. Q’s Clothing Commotion

Transcribed by Honey B Wackx

Today, April 30, 2008 I had to take Mr. Q and another resident to the doctor. It turned out to be a nightmare.

It took two of us to subdue Mr. Q as he was taking off his clothes as fast as we were trying to get him to put on good clothes to go to the doctor. So far the last few days putting on clothes and taking them off has been a real trying experience for both of us. He almost always has a problem with his clothes, either putting them on – taking them off – putting on two pair of pants -two pair of underwear, etc. He thinks its OK to have multiple sets of clothing on. Trying to convince otherwise has been futile so far.

After struggling with him for about twenty minutes or more he finally got his clothes on – with our help. Apparently anything with clothing is a BIG problem with him. I talked with him about the clothing problem yesterday for an hour to no avail. He says he understands, but it apparently has no real meaning to him.

Yesterday when I was trying to convince him to only wear one hat and not two he kept taking off one hat and leaving on the other. He did that maybe ten times during the course of my talk. At the end he kept on both caps. Nothing was accomplished.
