Alzheimer’s: Care and Treatment for Alzheimer’s Suffers

Presented by Honey B Wackx

When we get old everyone wants to live as normal a life as possible, even if they are real old. One of the most dreaded diseases, if not the most dreaded, that a person can get is Alzheimer’s disease. If anyone gets this terrible disease it is the beginning of the end for that person.

Although many people with Alzheimer’s disease live years after being diagnosed with it, they always end up dying unless they die of another cause first. It is a terminal illness and anyone with it will be lucky to live even ten years with the disease. Most with it die sooner.

Many breakthroughs and important discoveries have been found throughout the years of research and testing regarding the cure and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. New ones are being discovered all the time. Despite that, there is no known cure or prevention for Alzheimer’s. Furthermore, once the disease has started, there can be no repairing or slowing down the damage it will cause. It creates abnormal deposits of proteins in the brain.

People with Alzheimer’s disease have abnormal deposits of protein in their brains. This extra protein coats the brain and interacts with the neurons, nerves and neurotransmitters. It also causes damage and a large amount of atrophy in the brain. Eventually, the brain will continue to shrink and the otherwise wrinkled surface will start to smoothen out. This is basically what causes the degeneration in the mind and in the person’s body.

There however are some drugs and treatments that seem to relieve symptomatic conditions slightly in some cases. These drugs and Alzheimer’s treatments are especially important during the onset and early stages of the illness when the sufferer can still be aware of what he or she is going through.

Treatment for Alzheimer’sThe drugs, however, are strong, and like virtually all drugs have side effects. Sometimes the side effects cause even more problems. Also when multiple medicines or drugs are given to help contain it there could be adverse interactions with other drugs the person may be taken.

A person with Alzheimer’s at the early stages may suffer from depression or restlessness and certain drugs and Alzheimer’s treatments can be administered to help with this somewhat. Also, there have been some cases where memory loss at the beginning of dementia can still be improved somehow. Other possible symptoms that can be momentarily alleviated are sleep disorders and hallucinations.

Beyond these, the proper Alzheimer’s treatment of caregivers for patients is a highly specialized skill and needs to be administered by a professional. This will mean that the patient may eventually have to be entrusted in institutionalized care for the proper Alzheimer’s treatment needed.

However, in some states there are small businesses that often accept persons with Alzheimer’s disease. In California some RCFE’s (Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly) are permitted to accept Alzheimer residents if they are otherwise acceptable. The cost of these small home businesses may be somewhat less than full institutional care.

In some cases the loved ones of the Alzheimer’s patient will want to administer care personally. However the care and treatment needed by the patient will be full-time. It is also specialized so it will be costly. In addition it is best for a professional caregiver to ensure dignity is maintained throughout the course of the person’s disease.

Despite the present lack of Alzheimer’s treatment and cure, hope should never be abandoned. After all, with technological advancements in the field of science and medicine, it may not be too long before a viable Alzheimer’s treatment and cure will be discovered.

The best situation, however, in the long run would be for scientists or others to find the cure for Alzheimer’s disease. If not that, then perhaps a way to prevent Alzheimer’s will be found. That would help other individuals to not fall into the predicament of having developed the disease.

Perhaps in the near future, there will be vaccines for Alzheimer’s disease much like we have vaccines against other diseases. Many diseases in the past posed a challenge to society, but they were either eliminated or contained by the use of vaccines. In the event a cure for Alzheimer’s is not discovered soon a vaccine to help contain it would work wonders.

If you or someone you know and care about suffers from Alzheimer’s, it is best to consult a professional to learn your options. It could be eventual institutional care. Before that there could be help available from support groups. There could be counseling advice that can be given to the patient and to his or her friends or relatives.

There may be misconceptions and even difficulty in accepting Alzheimer’s disease. This could be true if it is on the side of the patient or from the people around him or her. The right counseling and guidance is a much needed part of the proper Alzheimer’s treatment. Even before this, however, if you suspect you or your loved one may have Alzheimer’s due to the outward symptoms you notice, it is important to have it diagnosed early so the proper help can be administered in time to help the person.

  1. well first off, everyone can get post traumatic stress from anything, its all mental, and i have it to be honest. Its not something you can control and its not something that is left unnoticed. You often catch yourself going through random flashbacks of a stressful situation. like I’ve noticed that when Im playing a video game, doesnt matter which game, but i was playing it and all of a sudden i was thinking about the stressful time that caused the post traumatic stress. and its like you re-live it temporarily, but some time had gone by because i had died on my game and my little sister had come in and asked me what i was doing. it causes bad dreams and makes you want to not sleep. depending on how bad it is. it just overall isnt something that is tolerable for very long
